CHAPTER XVII

 

LIEUT-COL THOMAS TALBOT HAMILTON AND HIS DESCENDANTS

 

       Thomas Talbot Hamilton was the 6th son of Capt. John Hamilton (Chap XIII p. ); he served in the 19th Foot; Ensign 15 Jul 1813; Lieut. 5 Jun 1814; Capt. 3 Mar 1825; Major 23 Jan 1837; Lieut-Col. 28 Dec 1838; sold out 30 Apr 1842; was Assistant Adjutant General at Barbados.  He m. first, Miss Skeete of Barbados.  The children of this marriage were:-

(1) John Skeete Hamilton, who lived in South America and afterwards in Switzerland; he m. Laura Garcia Zuniga, and had one da. Loenara Hamilton, who m. M. de Pelleton – their children were – Eugene de Pelleton and Julius de Pelleton;

(2) Geraldine de Courcy Hamilton, of whom presently;

(3) Sophia Cholmondeley Hamilton;

(4) Carlyon de Courcy Hamilton.

 

       Geraldine de Courcy Hamilton (ob. 9Apr 1898);  m. the Rev. Stephen Francis Bedford Peppin (ob. 27 Mar 1895), Minor Canon of Wells Cathedral; Vicar of Horrington. Their children were:-

(1) Arthur Hamilton Peppin, Director of Music at Rugby School;

(2) Gerald Francis Codrington Peppin, of whom presently;

(3) Talbot Sydenham Peppin,  Junior Master at Clifton College. Author of "Clubland of the Toiler," etc; ob. Oct 1918;

(4) Reginald de Courcy Peppin; resides at Kirri, Richmond, Nelson, New Zealand (1919); m. Hilda Beatson;

(5) Henry Bedford Peppin (ob. Jun 1916); m. Alma Stafford;

(6) Geraldine Margaret Peppin, of whom presently.

 

       Gerald Francis Codrington Peppin, B.A. Oxon., 1895; M.A. 1902; in Holy Orders,  Vicar of Marston Magna, Somerset 1905; m. Margaret Evelyn Millear, and has the following children:-

(1) Thomas Arthur Peppin; (2) Gerald Sydenham Peppin; (3) Phillip Hamilton Peppin; (4) Mary Alice Peppin; (5) Geraldine Margaret Peppin.

 

       Geraldine Margaret Peppin m. the Rev. William Richard Cambridge King, of Oriel Coll. Oxon; B.A. 1889; M.A. 1892; Wells Coll. 1893; Vicar of Swainswick, Dio. of Bath and Wells, 1914. Their children were John Stephen King, who served in the Royal Air Force in France; "missing" Oct 1918, and afterwards reported killed, and Margaret Madeline King.

 

       Thomas Talbot Hamilton m. secondly Jane Sharp of Manchester.  The children of this marriage were:-

(1) Talbot Hamilton, of whom presently;

(2) Thomas Sharp Hamilton, of whom presently;

(3) James Fetherston Haugh Hamilton, M.V.O. late of Coutts' Bank, London (ob. 10 Feb 1915, aged 64); m. Ellen Bertha, da. of Robert Schofield, Esq., of Rochdale;

(4) Isabella Catherine Hamilton, m. Col. H.J. Fitzgerald, 60th Rifles; (5) Anna Grace Hamilton;

(6) Mary Elizabeth Hamilton, of whom presently.

 

       Talbot Hamilton, formerly of the Indian Civil Engineers; afterwards settled in Melbourne, Australia (ob. 6 Jan 1915, aged 73); m. first Annie Cruttwell, by whom he had one son, Edward Frodsham Talbot Hamilton, of the Union Bank of Australia, Waimate, South Island, New Zealand, who m. Mabel Stoddert and has one da. Joan Isabel  Hamilton.  Talbot Hamilton m. secondly Catherine Campbell Creswick.  The children of this marriage were:-

(1) Henry Talbot Hamilton, M.B., B.S., Melbourne, Australia; Capt. Australian A.M.C.; served in Egypt and France in the 7th Field Ambulance; m. Caroline Workman and has one da. Aileen Barbara Hamilton;

(2) Malcolm Talbot Hamilton, M.B., B.S., Melbourne, Australia;

(3) Claud Talbot Hamilton, of Trazier Moolpa Moulamein, New South Wales; m. Miriam Sharp and has two da. Miriam Mary Hamilton and Aileen Margaret Hamilton;

(4) Maud Talbot Hamilton, m. Francis Roche Gubbins, Barrister and Solicitor, Melbourne, and has two sons, Robert Francis Gubbins and John Hamilton Gubbins;

(5) Alice Aileen Hamilton, m. Charles Dennis, M.D., Melbourne, Lieut-Col. Australian A.M.C., No. 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital.; mentioned in despatches; Electric Therapeutist and Ray Specialist.

 

       Thomas Sharp Hamilton, the 2nd son of Thomas Talbot Hamilton by his second marriage, was formerly in the Bombay Civil Service (ob. at Melbourne Feb 1914).  He m. first his cousin Katherine Francis Sharp (ob. 1885), by whom he had the following children:-

(1) Ethel Mary Hamilton, m. Ernest Oscar Mawson (ob. Oct 1905) and had three das. Katherine Violet Mawson, Winifred Frances Mawson and Margaret Mary Mawson;

(2) Clare Hamilton;

(3) Arthur Hamilton, F.R.C.S. Major Indian Medical Service; served in Indian Hosp., Alexandria, and in Bombay; Assist. Surgeon at Poona (1919) ; m. Winifred May Kilner;

(4) Cuthbert Hamilton has been doing Government work connected with the Royal Navy (1919);

(5) Ellen Ainslie  Hamilton;

(6) Marie Hamilton, m. Guy Philip Harben, O.B.E. (of Sevenoaks, Surrey); awarded for services connected with the Board of Trade, and has a son, Guy W Harben.

 

       Mary Elizabeth Hamilton, da. of Thomas Talbot Hamilton by his second marriage, m. Walter Langton, late of 13 Calverley Park, Tonbridge Wells (ob. 1917).  Their children were:-

(1) Stephen Hamilton Langton, House Master, Charterhouse; m. Violet Evans, and has one da. Gwladys Esme Langton;

(2) Hugh Banastre Langton, of Pembroke Coll. Cantab; B.A. 1898; M.A. 1902; Ridley Hall, Cantab, 1998; Holy Orders; Vicar of St. Paul's Chatham, Dio of Rochester 1911; Chaplain of the Forces, Egypt 1919; m. Mary Josephine Pakenham, and has one son, Hugh Roger Langton; (3) Walter Eric Langton, 246 Heath Street West, Toronto; 2nd Lieut. Royal Air Force; served in France and Canada; m. Ethel May B Webster, and has one son, Michael Langton;

(4) Aubrey Richard Langton, 5 Somers Road, Reigate, Surrey; Capt. Royal Air Force; m. Fanny Margaret Lloyd, and has one son, Kenneth Leyland Langton;

(5) Alice Mary Langton;

(6) Margaret Jane Langton;

(7) Hilda Grace Langton;

(8) Edith Katherine Langton,  m. Percy Mould, 8 Campden Park, Tunbridge Wells , Chief manager Mercantile Bank of India, London. Their children are:- Norah Katherine Mould, Margery Alice Mould and Cecil Langton Mould;

(9) Rosamund Cecily Langton, m. Apr 1914, Arthur Lyle Birch, Soicitor, Chester; Lieut. 1.5 Cheshire Regt; served in France. Their son is Henry Birch.
