CHAPTER XX

 

WILLIAM MAFFETT AND HIS DESCENDANTS

 

       William Maffett, whose name appears at the head of this chapter, was the son of William Maffett, who derived from a family of that name residing at Farranfad, near Clough in the Co. Down, and Elizabeth Walker his wife;  the latter was a da. of Samuel Walker of the City of Dublin, goldsmith (ob. 14 Nov 1769) and Anna Catherine Hamilton, his wife, the eldest da. of the Rev. Gustavus Hamilton (Chap IX).  The first-named William Maffett was b. 11 Nov 1781; educated in Dublin.  The following is an inscription on a medal of his now in the possession of his grandson, C.B. Harmsworth (p. ?):- "HOC PRETIUM OPERAE BENE NAVATAE IN LATINIS AUCTORIBUS GULIELMUS MAFFETT MERUIT EXAMINATIONE APUD SCHOLAM REVERENDI JOHANNIS FEA. IDIBUS DECEMBRIS 1793."  He was a Land Agent and resided at 24 South Frederick Street and 27 Pembroke Place, Dublin (ob. 11 Apr 1865); m. first, at Clogher, Co. Tyrone, 11 Nov 1809, Margaret (ob. 22 Oct 1829), da. of James Crooks of the Royal school, Armagh.  The children of this marriage who survived infancy were:-

(1) Anna Maria Maffett, of whom presently;

(2) William Hamilton Maffett, of whom presently; and;

(3) Elizabeth Sara Jane Maffett, b. 8 July 1823 (ob. 10 Oct 1919) m. at St. Peter's, Dublin, 19 August 1859, William John Fleming (ob. 1874), only surviving child, Isabel Patterson Fleming.

 

       Anna Maria Maffett was b. 23 Jun 1815; m. 28 April 1835,  Mathew Robert Bell of Armagh.  She died in 1876.  Their children were:-

(1) Margaret Sarah Bell (ob. May 25 1913);

(2) Mathew Charles Bell (ob. 1918), who m. his cousin, Anna bell, and had a da. Helen Bell;

(3) William Busby Bell (ob. s.p.);

(4) Anna Bell and;

(5) Adele Sarah Bell.

 

       Wm. Hamilton Maffett, the eldest son of William Maffett (the younger), b. 10 Jan 1817; Barrister-at-Law and Land Agent, resided at St. Helena, Finglas, Co. Dublin (ob. 20 Nov 1903); m. at Finglas Church 23 May 1849, Marcella Adelaide (bap. 2 Sept 1830) da. of John William Bayly, Esq., of Tola Lodge, Finglas.  She died 1 Nov 1913.  Their children were:-

(1) William Maffett )ob s.p. 25 Oct 1888);

(2) Arthur Frederick Maffett, Solicitor, Dublin (ob. 7 Feb 1912); m. Isabel Loughman and had three daus. :- (a) Helen Maffett; m. June 1911, at Parish Church, Burley in Wharfedale; Alfred Curzon Dobell, Barrister-in-Law, Major Queen's Own Canadian Hussars, youngest son of the Right Hon. Richard Read Dobell of Beauvoir Manor, Quebec, and 7 Ennismore Gardens, London.  Their children are Frances Helen Dobell and William Dobell;  (b) Hope Maffett, m. 16 Jan 1907, at North Stainley, Ripon, Edward Homer Jeffreys, only son of Edawrd Jeffreys, Esq., of Gipton Lodge, Leeds.  Their children are:- Isabel Jeffreys , Edward Homer Jeffreys (b. 10 May 1909), Kathleen Jeffreys, Owen Jeffreys (b. 24 Jul 1914); (c) Dorothy Maffett;

(3) Madeleine Maffett, (ob s.p. 7 Oct 1911); m. Edward Smartt, M.D. ; (4) Gerald Edward Maffett, Civil Servant;

(5) Oswald Bayly Maffett, District Inspector Royal Irish Constabulary (ob. 1 Dec 1914); m. Elizabeth Alexandrina Fenton and had two children, William Victor Cecil Maffett and Evelyn Aubre Maffett.  William Victor Cecil Maffett was educated at St. Columbia's Coll., near Dublin.  Entered the Royal Garrison Artillery; 2nd Lieut. 28 Feb 1917; posted to a Siege Battery in England, and left for Italy on 25 Jul 1917; served with the Italian 3rd Army on the Corso front from the beginning of August until Oct 5, when his battery left the front in Italy for Mesopotamia, where it arrived on Nov 5 1917.  The battery did not take part in any fighting in Mesopotamia.  He was posted on Mar 1st 1918, to an anti-aircraft section and remained with it until after the general armistice.  Lieut. 1919, and attached to 157th Heavy Battery stationed near Bagdad (sic).

(6) Gertrude Mary Maffett m. Jul 1878, at Finglas Church, Edward Spencer, M.A., Trin. Coll., Dublin (ob. 10 Sep 1891).  Their children were:- (a) George Bayly Spencer; (b) Ruth Adelaide Sara Spencer, who m. Henry Gascoyen Maurice, C.B., and has a son, Spencer Gascoyen Maurice, b. 6 Aug 1919; and (c) Frederick Albert Spencer, who entered the Army Service Corps 1912 as Lieut. went to France with the original Expeditionary Force in August, 1914, saw much service; was in the Retreat from Mons; received the Military Cross and his Captaincy; was invalided home; and, as the Medical Board refused to pass him for service again in France, he changed into the Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry) in which he served in Egypt and Palestine; obtained his Majority and the "1914 Star" (Mons Medal and Star), and also the British War Medal and the Allies "Victory" Medal.

(7) Marcella Amelia Maffett m. Alexander Sharp Deane. F.R.C.S.I., Chinese Customs Service, and had two sons, both educated at St. Columbia's Coll. near Dublin, Hugh A.S. Deane (ob. s.p. 6 Nov 1918, at East Grove, Mafeking, South Africa) and Cecil Hamilton Deane (ob. s.p. in Dublin 17 Feb 1917.)

(8) Edward Sinclair Maffett, Solicitor, resides at Thorneville, Palatine, near Carlow; m. Ruth, da. of Major Godfrey Colpoys Bloomfield (ob. 25 Feb 1901), late of 31st Punjabis, Indian Army – (see Burke's L.G.: Bloomfield of Castlecaldwell).  Their children are (a) Desmond Bloomfield Maffett, b. 31 May 1898, educated at St. Columba's Coll., near Dublin; Sub-Lieut 31st Punjabis, Indian Army; served in Egypt and Palestine 1918; (b) Murielle Bloomfield Maffett; (c) Edward Hamilton Bloomfield Maffett, b. 23 Dec 1903; and (d) Ruby Marcella Bloomfield Maffett.

(9) Charles Hamilton Maffett, Land Agent, Dublin (ob 10 June 1918); m. Dora Harriett Fenwick and had one son – Cuthbert William Maffett, who was b. 21 Aug 1894, educated at Charterhouse; 2nd Lieut; Lieut. 15 Aug 1914; Capt. Royal Dublin Fusiliers.  Served in France with the original Expeditionary force from September to 1st Nov 1914, when he was wounded, and afterwards served on "light" duty at the Curragh; in April, 1915, he went to Gallipoli and was in the first landing there on April 25th; again wounded and in hospital in Egypt; served at the 29th Divisional School in France from July 1916 to May 1917; then at the XVIII Corps School from May 1917 to Feb 1918; returned from France April 8th 1918; mentioned in Despatches, 1918; m. 2nd Feb 1918 at St Mary's, Bryanstown Square, London, Evelyn Vera, only da. of Dr. R. Cleveland, C.V.O., Cyprus, and has two daus. – Margaret Eirene Maffett and Joan Maffett.

(10) Reginald Ernest Maffett, born 18 Oct 1869; 2nd Lieut. West Riding Regt., 21 Jan 1893; Lieut. 28 Mar 1898; Capt. 16 Aug 1900; Major 24 Feb 1911.  Served in South African War 1899-1902.  Relief of Kimberly; operations in Orange Free State, including operations in Paardeberg; action of Poplar Grove and Dreifontein; operations in Transvaal, including action at Rhenoster Kop; operations in  Transvaal April 1901.  Queen's Medal with four clasps; King's Medal with two clasps.  Lieut. Col. Commanded his Regt. in India during the Great War, 1914-1918;  m. Gwendoline, da. of Sir Albert de Rutzen, Knt., and has three sons – (a) John Francis Maffett, b. 2 Dec 1912; (b) Gerard Hamilton Maffett, b. 11 June 1916; and (c) Alan Maffett, b. 12 Mar, 1919.

(11) Henry Telford Maffett, b. 24 Mar 1872; 2nd Lieut. Leinster Regt. (from Militia) 2 Jun 1894; Lieut. 10 Jun 1895; Capt. 12 Aug 1900; Staff Service; Garr. Adjut. St Lucia 12 Nov 1898 to Jul 1899; employed with W. Africa Frontier Force 14 Nov 1900 to 30 Jun 1902; Provost Marshall Mohmand Force 17 May 1908 to Jun 1908.  War services – West Africa (N. Nigeria) 1901; operations against the forces of Bida and Kontagora. Medal and clasp.  N.W. Frontier of India, 1908.  Provost Marshall attached 2nd Bridade operations in the Mohmand country. Medal with clasp.  Killed in action in France 21 Oct 1914.

(12) Emilie Alberta Maffett, m. her cousin Cecil Bisshop Harmsworth (p. 61).

 

       William Maffett m. 2ndly at St. Peter's, Dublin, 1 Jan 1831, Margaret, (b. 24 Dec 1805). da. of John Finlayson, of Dublin (see Chap XXII) .  She died 8 March 1881.  Their children were:-

(1) Sidney Ellen Maffett, b. 19 Nov 1831; ob. s.p. 19 Mar 1864;

(2) Grace Catherina Maffett, b.  3 Oct 1833   (ob. 28 Feb 1918); m. Albert Maximilian Selss, L.L.D., Professor of German in Trin. Coll., Dublin, ob. 9 May 1907;

(3) Adelaide Margaret Maffett m. her cousin John Hamilton (p.53);

(4) Ellen Amelia Maffett, of whom presently;

(5) Geraldine Mary Maffett, of whom later – (see Chap XXI p.61);

(6) John William Maffett, b. 1 Mar 1841.  Ensign 88th Foot, Connaught Rangers (ob. s.p. at Rawalpindi, India, 6 Oct 1867); m. Abby Mary Ryan, ob. 28 Jan 1884;

(7) Charles Frederick Maffett, b. 24 April 1843.  Ensign 2nd West India Regt.; Lieut. 51st Foot; ob. s.p. 1 Oct 1908;

(8) Caroline Olivia Maffett, b. 31 Oct 1846; m. Carl Borntraeger of Wiesbaden, Germany.  Their children were:- (a) Ralph Borntraeger, ob s.p.; (b) Hildegard Borntraeger; m. Felix Bott and has the following children: Maximilian Bott, Martha Bott, Anita Bott, and Alexander Bott; and (c) Fannie Borntraeger, m. Herr Mermagen, and has a son, Ralph Mermagen.

 

       Ellen Amelia Maffett, above-named, was b. 18 Mar 1837 (ob. 21 Mar 1911); m. 5 Aug 1862, Alexander Bell, b. 28 Jul 1828 (ob. 6 Mar 1908); son of Thomas Bell, Esq., Killen, near Dundalk; was a Solicitor in Dublin.  The following were their children:-

(1) Theodore Bell, M.D., Trin. Coll., Dublin; b. 29 April 1863.  Resides at Warrenpoint, Co. Down.  Joined the R.A.M.C. as Lieut. 20 Jun 1915; posted to Tidworth, Salisbury Plain, afterwards to Brighton Camp, Codford, to take medical charge of 16th Brigade R.F.A.  Transferred to Cork, thence to Queenstown, from thence to the Curragh and then to Dublin.  Sent to Derry to take medical charge of the 3rd Special Reserve Batt. Royal Iniskilling Fusiliers, etc.  Was through the Dublin Rebellion, Easter 1916.  Promoted Capt. June 1916.  Resigned Commission June 1917, with rank of Capt. with special leave of the King;  m. Alice dau. of Philip Bevan, Esq., M.D.  The following are their children: (a) Theodore Alice Bevan V.A.D., 1918; (b) Philip Alexander Bell, Enlisted 16 June, 1915, for the Motor Machine Gun Battery, R.A.; Seargt. Oct 1916.  Present at the Battle of the Somme, 1916 up to the blowing up of Messines.  Recommended for a Commission Jul 1917; 2nd Lieut. R.G.A. 6 May 1918; (c) Henry Ernest Bell, Private Artists' Rifles, O.T.C., 16 Oct 1918; (d) Eleanor Alexandra Bell, V.A.D.., 1918; (e) Sidney Ellen Bell;

(2) Sidney Maffett Bell, b. Sep 1864; M.A. Trin. Coll., Dublin, Solicitor, Dublin;

(3) Adelaide Bell, m Jul 1898, Charles William Wilson, b. Dec 1870, only son of Charles Monck Wilson, Esq., of Cahirconlish, Co. Limerick, and Alice Maria his wife, da. of the Rev. Hugh Edward Prior, M.A., T.C.D.; and grand-son of Thomas Maunsell Wilson, Esq., of Cahirconlish and the Honble. Isabella Monck his wife, dau. of the 1st Visct Monck.  Their children are Meriel Prior Wilson and Judith Ellen Wilson;

(4) Alice Caroline Bell; (5) Henry Ernest Bell (ob. s.p.); (6) Edith Anna Bell; (7) George Finlayson Bell;

(8) Edward St. Clair Bell, B.A.; Trin, Coll., Dublin, Solicitor; Assistant Examiner Land Registry of Ireland; m. 18 April 1917, at Monkstown Church, Co. Dublin, Gertrude  Edith Foster;
