CHAPTER V

 

WILLIAM HAMILTON THE SECOND OF BALLYFATTON AND HIS DESCENDANTS

 

William Hamilton the second son of the first settler of that name at Ballyfatton married Isabel, daughter of William Hamilton of Loghmuck who held the lands of Termegan and a house in Strabane under the Earl of Abercorn as well as other lands in Tyrone.  William Hamilton, whose name is at the head of this chapter, purchased Ballyfatton from his nephew, William Hamilton of Priestfield (Chap 2).  (See Chancery Bill 10th Dec 1670, Jane Galbraith and others against William Hamilton, sen. of Ballyfatton, and answer of William Hamilton, Jun. 7 July 1671).  His will is dated 2 Oct 1680; it was proved 30 Jun 1681, by Patrick Hamilton his son; the seal upon the will shows the paternal coat of Hamilton, viz: gules, three cinquefoils ermine.  The following were his children:-

(1) William Hamilton, 3rd of Ballyfatton. He married  Margery, da. of Robert Galbraith of Dowish, Co. Donegal; settlement dated 13 Dec 1653 – (see above mentioned Chancery Bill, 10 Dec 1670).  He and his wife died in 1674 (in the lifetime of his father) and were buried at Caledon. For the descendants of this marriage see below;

(2) James;  (3) Charles;  (4) Frederick;  (5) John;  (6) Archibald;

(7) George; married Christian, da. of Mathew Stronge of Clonlee and Ann his wife _ (See Stronge of Tynan Abbey, Co. Armagh, Bart. Burke's Peerage); lived at Island Moore, Co. Donegal; died in Derry during the siege; admn. to his brother, Patrick Hamilton of Killeter, 26 July 1670; left one daughter Anna;

(8) Patrick Hamilton of Killeter; see Chap VIII p. 17 for his descendants;

(9) Margaret; (10) Marjory; m. Richard Wilson (11) Katherine;  (12) Jean, married John Lowry, ancestor of the Earls of  Belmore;  (13) Isabel, married David Brown.

 

       The sons of William Hamilton the 3rd of Ballyfatton were:-

(1) William Hamilton, the 4th of Ballyfatton, who in  1701  lodged a claim with the Council the Estates forfeited in 1690 to get back the lands; he married Sara …..; for his descendants see below;

(2) Capt. James Hamilton of Lough McNab, O.S.P. 1730; will proved 11 May 1731; buried at Caledon;

(3)  Lieut-Col. Archibald Hamilton in Lord Mountjoy's Regt. of foot, O.S.P.; will proved 22 Sep 1712;

 

       The sons of William Hamilton the 4th of Ballyfatton were:-

(1)  Archibald Hamilton of Ballyfatton, Cornet of Dragoons; married first Jane Nesbitt by whom he had two sons, William Hamilton of Ballyfatton and Eden. Co. Donegal (ancestor of the Hamiltons of Mossvill – (see Burke's LG), for whose descendants see Chap VI; and George, in the army; killed Battle of Almanza, 25 April 1707; O.S.P.; and two daughters Sarah, married John Tredennick of Camlin, Co. Donegal, and Letitia, m. William Young of Coolkeiragh. Cornet Archibald married secondly Lettice Fairlie ; will proved 22 Sept 1761; by whom he had six sons; Archibald of Dublin M.D. Pres Coll of Physicians (will 1777); Richard; John[1], Capt in the army; killed at Seringapatam; James, Alderman of Dublin (will 1798); Sampson in the army, O.S.P.; Galbraith, ancestor of the Hamiltons of Castle Hamilton (see Burkes L.G.) (of whom below) and one da. Margery, m. 19 Feb 1776 Peter Paumier.

(2) Charles of Fortstewart, for whose descendants see Chap VII;

(3) Galbraith, who leased portion of Ballyfatton from his brother, Cornet Archibald, 8 Jul 1741; term 21 years; bequeathing same to his nephew James Hamilton of Fortstewart (Chap VII) by his will dated 12 Nov 1776.

He also had two daughters; Anne m. William Drummond and Margery.

 

Galbraith, the youngest son of Cornet Archibald of Ballyfatton, m. Jun 1762, Jane Brook. His will dated 29 Apr 1883, was proved 13 Jul 1791. He left two sons and two das.

(1)  James, d.s.p.

(2)  John, of whom below.

(3)  Martha, m. George Maconchy of Rathmore.

(4)  Mary, died unmarried.

 

John, the 2nd son, of Larkfield, Dublin, m. Jane, sister of Thomas Dickson, of Grangeville and had:

(1)  James of Castle Hamilton (see below), and

(2)  John,  d.s.p.

 

James Hamilton of Castle Hamilton[2], Co. Cavan, J.P., D.L., High Sheriff 1847; m. 4 Jun 1839, Mary Matilda, dau. of Thomas Dickson, of Grangeville, Co. Dublin. She d. 1895. He d. 1887 leaving:

(1)  James, d. 14 May 1904

(2)  William Joseph, of whom below.

(3)  Robert Claude, m. 26 Nov 1891, Eva Adeline, dau. of the late Charles Stuart Adams, of Glynch House, (see Adams of Northlands in B.L.G.I.)

(4)  Anna Elizabeth d. unm.

(5)  Elizabeth Matilda, d.unm.

(6)  Mary Katherine

(7) Maude Victoria, d. unm.

William Joseph Hamilton of Castle Hamilton, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan, J.P. and D.L., High Sheriff 1886, M.A. Trin. Coll. Dublin; Capt. and Hon. Major late 4th Bn. Royal Irish Fusiliers, previously 2nd Vol. Batt. Royal Welsh Fus., b. 1850; m. 1897, Frances Florence, dau. of the late Charles Stuart Adams, of Glynch House. Resided Drumanny, Killeshandra. Died ?.  Buried Killeshandra Old Cemetary with the James Hamilton family vault.
