CHARLES HAMILTON OF FORTSTEWART AND HIS
DESCENDANTS
Charles Hamilton, son of William Hamilton
the 4th of Ballyfatton; (will 4 Jan 1775) had two children, James,
who purchased the portions of Ballyfatton leased to Galbraith Hamilton, and a
da. who m. …. Harvey. The children of James Hamilton were (1) Mary, who m. her cousin James Hamilton of Eden (see
Chap VI); and (2) Margery; (3) Sarah;
(4) Galbraith; and (5) James. The last named James Hamilton had four sons;
James, John, Timothy, and Charles, and the latter Charles Hamilton had four
children – James, who resided at Ballyfatton, Micah Cary, Marta and Marjory. The last named James Hamilton m. first
Margaret McIlwain of Carnick, Co. Donegal, by whom he had the following
children: (1) Charles, who m. Mary Dickson and died without issue; (2) John Harris Hazlett; (3) James; (4) William; (5) Mary; (6) Eliza;
(7) Margaret; (8) Anne; (9) George Alexander.
James Hamilton, the father of these children, m. secondly Harriet
Arnold.
George Alexander Hamilton, who resided
at Ballyfatton, m. Sarah Elizabeth Swiney, by whom he had the following
children: (1) Mary, ob.1904; (2) Norah; (3) James Hazlett; and (5) George
Cecil, ob. 1900.
James
Hazlett Hamilton, was residing at Ballyfatton in 1920 (when Everard Hamilton
updated these memoirs), m. 29 June 1905, Florence B. Kildahl, and had
three sons and two das.: Philip Cecil Hazlett, b. 1906 d. 1962; John
Harris Hazlett, b. 1910 d. s.p; James Alexander Hazlett, b. 1913 d. s.p.; and
Elizabeth Mary Hazlett [1],
b 1915. He had a second daughter, Florence Nina Hazlett b. 1922 who had four
daughters, one of whom is named Ruth.
When Philip Cecil died in 1962, the
house was inherited by the four remaining siblings and occupied by Elizabeth on
the death of James Alexander. Being the last of her line of the family she sold
the house in about 1996, it having remained in the family since 1616. In March
2003 she was living in Strabane and Ballyfatton is now owned by a Mr.
Patterson.
