This is part of a photograph of the memorial tablet of Surgeon General John Butler Hamilton (see Appendix 3).

The arms which derive from the marriage of Patrick Hamilton to Jane Newburgh (whose father married Ann, daughter of Bishop Downham) are made up as follows:

Upper left and lower right quadrants – Gules, Three Cinquefoils ermine pierced of a field for Hamilton.

Upper right and lower left quadrants – the left half -  Or, 3 bendlets azure within a bordure gules for Newburgh. The right half - Azure, on a chevron between two doves argent, beaked and legged gules, in chief, and a wolf's head erased of second in base a rose gules between two clasped books of the third, garnished or for Downham.
