CHAPTER XIX

 

FRANCIS WILLIAM HAMILTON AND HIS DESCENDANTS

 

       Francis William Hamilton, the 6th son of the Rev. Nicholas Hamilton (Chap XII p. ) was an Attorney-at-Law, and for some time Under Sheriff of the Queen's Co.  He lived at Portarlington in that county, and afterwards in Dublin, where he died of cholera in Jul 1832 aged 65, and was buried at St. George's, Dublin.  He m. first (Licence 20 Oct 1796) Ann (ob. 15 Aug 1806), da. of Henry Cary, Esq., of Portarlington and Anne his wife, 3rd da. of Annesley Gore, Esq., of Beleek, Co, Mayo.  (Henry Cary was the eldest son of Henry Cary, Archdeacon of Killala, and Mary Dering,  his wife, and grandson of Mordechai Cary, Bishop of Killala and Achonry;  will pro. 26 Nov 1751; arms: azure, on a bend sable, three roses of the field, barbed and headed proper;  Their children were:-

(1) Gustavus Hamilton, of whom presently;

(2) Harriett Hamilton, who m. George Turpin, Esq.;

(3) Anne Hamilton, who m. John Egan, Esq., M.D.; and;

(4) Catherine Hamilton, who m. George Strong, Esq., and settled in Sydney, N.S.W. in 1834, and their son being Gustavus Hamilton Strong.

 

       Gustavus Hamilton (the elder) was an Attorney-at-Law and Solicitor-in-Chancery and lived in Dublin.  He died 15 Mar 1868, aged 68 and was buried at Mount Jerome, Dublin.  He m. first Maria Bolger (ob. Jan 1837; buried at St. Anne's, Dublin) by whom he had five sons:-

(1) Gustavus Hamilton (the younger), of whom presently;

(2) Francis Hamilton, of whom presently;

(3) John Hamilton, of whom presently;

(4) Alexander Hamilton, of whom presently;

(5) Richard Gustavus Hamilton, born 24 Nov 1833; bap. St. Anne's, Dublin (ob. s.p.)

 

       Gustavus Hamilton (the younger), the eldest son of Gustavus Hamilton (the elder) above-mentioned was bap. 8 Dec 1822, at St. Thomas's, Dublin.  He was an Attorney-at-Law and Solicitor-in-Chancery.  Settled in Brisbane, Queensland, and died there 4 Nov 1884.  He m. in 1846 Emily Pauline Alday (ob. 21 Aug 1908) at Brisbane.  Their children were:-

(1) John Edward Hamilton, of whom presently;

(2) Charles William Hamilton, of whom presently;

(3) Frederick Gustavus Hamilton, Solicitor and afterwards (4 Sep 1900) a Barrister in Queensland; Crown Prosecutor North Queensland; m. 10 Dec 1907, at All Saints' Church, Queensland, Ella Muriel Markwell; resides at Townsville, Queensland  (1920);

(4) George Claud Hamilton;

(5) Richard Alexander Hamilton (ob. s.p. Mar 1917); m. Marion Reid.

 

       John Edward Hamilton (ob. 29 Mar 1917), the eldest son of Gustavus Hamilton (the younger) resided at Toowoomba, Queensland, and was a Surveyor.  He m. 18 Dec 1889, at All Saints', St. Kilda, Melbourne, Katherine Florence, da. of W.H. Norman, Commander Victorian Navy.  Their children were:-

(1) Kathleen Emily Hamilton;

(2) John Edgar Hamilton, served in the 11th Light Horse Regt.  Australian Imperial Force, Egypt, 1917; Sergeant; received the D.C.M.; (3) Paul Norman Hamilton, served in the 11th Machine Coy.,  Australian Imperial Force, 1917 ob. 8th Aug 1918, of pneumonia, at 5th Casualty Clearing Station, France;

(4) Mary Victoria Hamilton;

(5) Anne Isabel Hamilton;

(6) Francis William De Bentley Hamilton;

(7) Florence Norman Hope Hamilton.

 

       Charles William Hamilton, 2nd son of Gustavus Hamilton (the younger) resides at Brisbane and is Crown Solicitor there.  He m. Mary Ann, da. of Maitland White, of Woodlands, Devon.  Their children are:-

(1) Charles Alday Hamilton, who m. Mabel Fanny, da. of William Richard Robinson, Auctioneer, Toowoomba, and had four children, Charles Gustavus Hamilton, Frederick Arthur Hamilton (ob. s.p.), Hylda Frances Hamilton, and George Alexander Hamilton;

(2) Stella Emily Hobberton Hamilton, who m. William Hodgen, Architect, Toowoomba, and has the following children:- Dorothy Hodgen, Frederick Arthur Hodgen, Hector Hamilton Hodgen, Neil Hodgen and Owen Hodgen;

(3) Helen Mary Hamilton, who m. Colin King, Engineer, Brisbane, and has a da. Mrgaret Esther Hamilton King, and a son William King;

(4) Evelyn Hamilton, m. Arthur Atheson Griffiths, Engineer, Toowoomba, and has two das. Marjorie Park Griffiths and Beatrice Griffiths;

(5) Gladys Eileen Hamilton, who m. James George Leadbeater, of Toowoomba, B.A.., L.L.B., Melbourne University., and has a son Charles James Leadbeater;

(6) Frederika Ethel Hamilton, who m. William Dalby of Brisbane;

(7) Edward Gustavus Hamilton.

 

       Francis Hamilton, the 2nd son of Gustavus Hamilton (the elder) was a Solicitor and settled in New York, where he died 22 April 1874; he m. Matilda, da. of …….Rodd, Librarian to the Duke of Sussex, and had two sons, Francis Alexander Hamilton and William Alfred Hamilton.

 

John Hamilton. the 3rd. son of Gustavus Hamilton (the elder) was born 28 June 1828 ; bap. at St. Thomas's Dublin; Attorney-at-Law and Solicitor-in-Chancery (ob. 25 Nov 1879; buried at Mount Jerome, Dublin); m. first, 18 May 1853, at St. Anne's, Dublin, Adelaide Margaret (b. 30 Jan 1835; ob. 31 Jan 1862), da. of William Maffett (Chap XX).  Their children were:-

(1) Villiers Sidney Hamilton, b. 12 Feb 1854; ob. 8 Aug 1861;

(2) Everard Hamilton, of whom presently;

(3) Florence Aubre Hamilton; and;

(4) Maud Caroline Hamilton (ob. 27 Jul 1866).

 

       Everard Hamilton[1] was born 30th June 1855; B.A. Trin. Coll., Dublin 1876; Attorney-in-Law and Solicitor-in-Chancery, 1877; m. 21 April 1881, at Christ Church, Taney, Co. Dublin, Elinor Anna, da. of Andrew Nolan, Esq., M.D., of Dublin and Emma his wife da. of Chaworth Lyster, Esq., of Violet Hill, Finglas, Co. Dublin, (see "Memorials of an Ancient House," by the Rev. H.L. Lyster Denny, 1913, pp. 69 and 70).  Their children were:-

(1) Gustavus Everard Hamilton, b. 14 March 1882; educated at Saint Columba's Coll., near Dublin; B.A. Senior Moderator in Legal and Political Science, Trin. Coll., Dublin 1903; Barrister-in-Law 1 Nov 1905; Member of the Royal Irish Academy; (ob. s.p. 2 May 1918); m. 16 Oct 1916, Anne Beatrice, B.A., Senior Moderator in Celtic Languages Trin. Coll., Dublin 1910, only child of Edward Parnall Culverwell, M.A. Senior Fellow of Trin. Coll., Dublin, and Edith Geraldine his wife, da. of William Fitzgerald, Bishop of Cork and afterwards of Killaloe; (2) Helen Mary Adelaide Hamilton; (3) Sylvia Grace Victoria Hamilton.

 

       John Hamilton, the 3rd son of Gustavus above named, m. 2ndly 26 April 1867, Sara Elizabeth (ob. 17 Oct 1911), da. of James Groves, Esq., of Armagh, by whom he had a da. Sara Adelaide Olivia Hamilton.

 

       Alexander Hamilton, the 4th son of Gustavus Hamilton (the elder) was a Barrister-at-Law; J.P. Co. Dublin; Assist Secretary to the Lord Chancellor of Ireland (ob. 9 May 1904); m. 14 Aug 1883, Anita Ellen Mary, da. of Wm, Hamilton Esq., M.D. of Urlar House, Co. Sligo.  Their das. are Muriel Maud Hamilton and Mildred Anita Hamilton.

 

       Francis William Hamilton m. 2ndly Sarah, da. of Benedict Hamilton of Carlow; LL.D, B.D. (see Hamilton MSS, edited by T.K. Lowry).  Their children were:-

(1) Benedict Gillespie Hamilton[2]; settled on Canada and died there;

(2) James Hamilton; settled in Philadelphia and died there;

(3) William Cranston Hamilton, of whom presently;

(4) Henry Forster Hamilton, of whom presently;

(5) Charles Frederick Hamilton, Newspaper Proprietor, San Francisco; m. Mary Garvey (who m. 2ndly Stephen Gashwiler of San Francisco), and had a da. Mary Catherine Hamilton, who m. 1 Apr 1892, Albert Baldwin Bagley;

(6) Sarah Jane Hamilton (ob. s.p.);

(7) Olivia Anna Hamilton, m. Henry Bolton, Esq., of Co. Wexford (ob. s.p.).

 

       William Cranston Hamilton, above named, was b. in Dublin 1818; Editor of the "New York Herald", and afterwards proprietor of the "San Francisco Daily Herald" (ob. at Acapulco, Mexico, 1853; m. in New York 1839, Catherine Matilda (ob. 1894), da. of Thomas Lonergan, formerly of Dublin, Newspaper Proprietor.  Their children were:-

(1) Francis Hamilton (ob. s.p. an infant);

(2) James Mathew Hamilton, b. 1845, ob. 1857;

(3) Catherine Matilda Hamilton (ob. s.p. an infant);

(4) Richard Francis Hamilton, b. in New York 1847; m. 1878 Emily E., da. of James Edward Clayton of Baltimore, U.S.A.;

(5) John William Hamilton, b. in New York 1849; m. 1881 Florence Josephine, da. of Judge Thomas W. Pittman of New York, and had two das., Alice Bailey Hamilton and Florence Hamilton.

 

Henry Forster Hamilton, above-named, lived in Dublin (ob. 3 Sep 1890); m. Eliza Freeman of Leamington (ob. Feb 1890).  Their children were:-

(1) Hans Hamilton (ob. s.p.);

(2) Ernest C. Hamilton (ob s.p.);

(3) Henry Egerton Hamilton (ob. s.p.)

(4) Frances Hamilton;

(5) Ambrosia Hamilton; (7) Florence Margaret Hamilton (ob. 7 Apr 1893); and (7) Beatrice Cordelia Hamilton, who m. 29 May 1882, James Wilson, 3rd son of the Rev. Professor Robert Wilson, D.D., Assembly Coll. Belfast.  Their children were:- (1) Robert Hamilton Wilson; (2) James Claud William Wilson; (3) Beatrice Amy Wilson and (4) Isabel Emilie  Wilson.

 

       Gustavus Hamilton (the elder), m. 2ndly in 1837, Catherine Laughlin, otherwise Forsyth (ob. s.p.).
